Why Do We Care So Much What Other People Think?

Caring what other people think is part of being human. The difficulty begins when we start living as though everyone is watching, judging or analysing us far more closely than they actually are. We edit ourselves, replay conversations and hesitate over choices because we are trying to manage an audience that may exist largely in our own minds. Sometimes freedom begins with a wonderfully ordinary recognition: most people are far more occupied with their own lives than they are with ours.

If concern about other people's opinions feels deeply familiar, The Self We Learned to Be explores how approval, belonging and adaptation can shape the person we learn to become.
